ARTISTIC RESEARCH This project explores the possibilities of motion tracking in the context of digital fashion. As the expressive arm strikes are a key element in this disco infused dance style called Waacking, they were taken as the leading point for the extraction of the shapes. This resulted in visualizations of the tracked movement traces in glamorous digital materials that surround the avatar. The traces the shape is based on, is 100% generated by the movement while the aesthetic of its cognitive shell is designed by referencing cultural codes as the fan, an often-used prop in Waacking. To document an individual’s signature movement, motion tracking systems were implemented, and 3D software was used to design signature pieces with the gathered data. The investigation showed an inherent coherence between both disciplines - fashion and dance. As a tool for communication and medium to create identity both domains have the power to visually represent individuality and cultural belonging.
